You’re Not Crazy, Tired, or “Just Getting Older”: Understanding Perimenopause

So many women begin noticing changes in their 30s and 40s —fatigue no matter the amount of sleep, brain fog (it’s pretty scary sometimes), weight changes (hello, spare tire), new or increased anxiety, irregular periods, joint pain, mood swings, disrupted sleep, low libido, or simply not feeling like themselves anymore (aka kind of crazy). These women often experience symptoms of ADHD, frequently feeling overstimulated and overwhelmed.

What do women most often hear? Maybe the complaints are blamed on stress or “getting old.” Perhaps the “labs are normal.” But hormonal changes during perimenopause are VERY real. And women deserve support, answers, and personalized care. The reality is that symptoms can begin several YEARS before menopause.

Hormonal imbalances due to perimenopause are often overlooked or missed. But why? Well, the truth is —hormones fluctuate (a lot). Often, the symptoms that arise can mimic things like stress, thyroid dysfunction, burnout, anxiety/depression, or simply…aging. Many women are still having normal menstrual cycles and assume they’re “too young” as well.

The truth is that women do not have to suffer through this storm of symptoms for 10-15 years, losing their minds along the way. Sometimes it takes additional investigation and reinforcements. In today’s world, many options for hormone support exist —including lifestyle changes, nutrition, exercise, stress management, and prioritizing sleep. In the clinic, we can carefully look at labs, develop individualized treatment plans, and utilize hormone therapy when appropriate.

At The Well Woman Co., my goal is to provide thoughtful, personalized care that helps women feel heard, supported, and empowered through every stage of life.

Here’s to feeling like yourself again.
